As a young person growing up in the village of Sixmilebridge you would always hear the generations before speak of the great social occasions of dances in Barons Hall or how the Fair of the Bridge was the social highlight of the year. For the last 10 years or so we have experienced some great nights at the Winter Music Weekends in January but the 3 nights of entertainment we have witnessed at the Marquee in the Bridge over the weekend will provide lasting memories for our current generation.

Sunday afternoon saw a large attendance at the monster bingo with local lady Hilda Corbett being the popular winner of the big game on the night. Following bingo the stage was set for Stars in their Eyes with an audience of around 1,000 seated in the giant marquee.

Our host on the night was Syl O’Connor who opened the show in style with his own rendition of the Tony Christie classic Show me the way to Amarillo. The first of 10 contestants on the night was Pat Hayes as Meatloaf and he raised the roof with a top class performance. Adele, Lady Gaga, Neil Diamond, Tina Turner and plenty more followed before an unknown boyband known as Wrong Direction who were the butt of all jokes leading up to the event took to the stage. Members included Seadna Morey, Caimin Morey, Noel Purcell, Eanna Burns, Jason Loughnane and club captain Paidi Fitzpatrick. They statrted (view here) with a Backstreet Boys classic before finishing with a One Direction tune. To top it off Seadna Morey gave a display of breakdancing which had screams from the adoring fans who had gathered in the aisles.

As the scores were totted up club Chairman Paddy Meehan and event organiser Kevin Phelan spoke about the great pride they felt this weekend and thanked all the volunteers and the people who supported the events for making it the massive success it was.

Soon after Syl had the golden envelope and announced the winners as ….. Wrong Direction who sang again to the loudest of screams and whistles from the audience.

A big congrats to all 10 performers who were superb and their coaches who ensured the show was most professional. Also hats off to Fionn Hayes who provided the interval entertainment and received a standing ovation and to Adam Moloney who also showed he is a star in the making.

The night was closed off with local band The Black Fridays who ensured the dance floor was rocking till the early hours.

There was a song written about the Fair of the bridge back in the day – who’s to say Fionn Hayes and Wrong Direction won’t come together to pen a new one about the “Mighty Festival of the Bridge”. As the year of 2017 comes to an end we all look forward to the sod being turned in June 2018 for the new indoor arena providing a new direction for the club we all love.
