On Saturday, Sixmilebridge GAA Club was delighted to host our annual Under 11 Festival of Hurling, with beautiful sunshine providing the perfect backdrop for a fantastic day of hurling.
Five clubs were represented on the day: Sixmilebridge, Inagh/Kilnamona, Tubber, Kildangan and Athenry, with teams travelling from Clare, Tipperary and Galway to take part. Introduced onto the field by Tommy Liddy these lads were ready for action
The festival was played in a group-stage format, with each club fielding two teams of 11 players. Inagh\Kilnamona and Tubber joined forces, with aggregate scores determining the results against their opposition. Three competitive games followed, with very little separating the teams and plenty of excellent hurling on display throughout the day.
🏆 Shield Final
The Shield Final saw Kildangan take on the combined Inagh/kilnamona and Tubber side in a brilliant contest. With the game hanging in the balance right to the final moments, a late goal proved decisive, swinging the match in favour of Inagh/Kilnamona and Tubber, who were deserved shield winners. Kildangan, with a very young team, can be extremely proud of their performances and went home with the runners-up spot .
🏆 Cup Final
The Cup Final was a clash between the hosts, Sixmilebridge, and Athenry. It was a closely fought encounter, with just one score separating the teams on aggregate at half-time. Athenry pulled away in the second half, however, to emerge as deserving cup winners after an excellent day’s hurling from both sides. Thanks to the two referees Kieran liddane and Jack o halloran who made his debut refereeing and the feedback was very positive!!
👏 A Wonderful Day On and Off the Field
To round off the festival, all teams received commemorative plaques, presented by Senior Club Secretary Adrian Hogan.
The hospitality continued afterwards in the GAA hall, where all the young players enjoyed a hot meal, kindly sponsored by Sixmilebridge Minor Club. Coaches and parents were also well looked after with teas, coffees and sandwiches throughout the day.
A massive thank you to Sixmilebridge Minor Club for helping to fund and host this wonderful event.
We would also like to extend a huge thank you to all the parents and coaches who attended and supported the festival. A very special word of thanks goes to all the mammies who put in a tremendous effort with the cooking and baking, serving teas and coffees throughout the day, and helping to serve the food afterwards. Your generosity, hard work and hospitality were greatly appreciated by everyone in attendance.
We are truly fortunate to have such wonderful volunteers and families involved in Sixmilebridge GAA Club.
Most importantly, well done to every player who took part. The skill, sportsmanship, effort and enthusiasm on display made for a brilliant day of underage hurling.
Go raibh mĂle maith agaibh go lĂ©ir! 💛💙
