Sixmilebridge 1-14 Scariff/Ogonnelloe 0-10

Sixmilebridge Under 16’s got their championship off to a positive start last Friday evening with a win over Scariff/Ogonnelloe at O’Garney Park. Played in ideal conditions with little or no wind to deal with, Scariff/Ogonnelloe started the brighter and were rewarded with the first score of the game 5 minutes in when Eanna O’Brien pointed the first of his seven frees. David Kennedy got the ‘Bridge up and running a minute later with a nice point out on the wing. Evan Murphy put the ‘Bridge two points ahead on 11 minutes with a well taken free 50 metres out on the wing and a ’65 which fell well short and bounced over the bar giving some indication how hard the pitch is at present. The exchanges were even enough between the two teams with frees cancelling out frees on either side. It was the ability of the ‘Bridge forwards to chip away with scores from paly as well which was making the difference. This was demonstrated with Luke O Halloran and Cian Gleeson getting two cracking points, O’Halloran hitting over his shoulder out on the wing and Gleeson hitting first time from a nice hand pass from O’Halloran two minutes later. The best passage of play in the first half was when the ‘Bridge forwards worked the ball intelligently up the field to find Colm Flynn free in the corner and he hit a bullet of a shot into the left corner giving Sean Treacy in the Scariff/Ogonnelloe goal no chance stopping. Five of the six forwards were involved in this move and it was good to watch. Sean McNamara finished the scoring for the first half with a point which was worked from an indirect free to leave the halftime score 1-8 to 0-5 in favour of the ‘Bridge.
The ‘Bridge extended their lead to nine points with two Sean McNamara frees and a second point from play from Colm Flynn within seven minutes of the restart. Scariff/Ogonnelloe were pushing hard to make a breakthrough but every effort was met with fierce resistance from a ‘Bridge half backline of Evan Murphy, Darragh Toomey, and Leon Kelly. Scariff/Ogonnelloe were only getting frees which Eanna O’Brien converted. However these were cancelled out by Sean McNamara, David Kennedy, and Cian Gleeson points all from play. Eanna O’Brien finished the scoring with the last of his frees well into injury time. A seven point victory for the ‘Bridge but more importantly two valuable points on the championship table in what promises to be a very close race.
For Scariff/Ogonnelloe Eanna O’Brien kept his team ticking over with some super frees. Shane Kavanagh and Patrick Ryan were also very impressive.
For Sixmilebridge the whole ‘Bridge backline were strong keeping Scariff/Ogonnelloe to 3 points from play. Sean McNamara showed good skill and a very strong physical presence in half forward while Colm Flynn was very sharp in the corner forward position.
