Sixmilebridge 0-12 St. Joeseph’s/Doora Barefield 1-9

Last Thursday evening in Newmarket, Sixmilebridge Under16A Shield team contested the U16A BNÓG Shield Final, their opponents on the night being St.Joesephs Doora Barefield. Aided by a strong breeze D/B made the brightest of starts and were 4 points up after 11 minutes. Oisin Breen finally got the ‘Bridge up and running when he received a lovely pass from Evan O Callaghan to slot the ball over the bar on 14 minutes. A minute later Matthew Power won possession 50 metres out and made a blistering run at the ‘Bridge goal and appeared to be through only to be hooked by Morgan O Connell just as he was pulling the trigger. It was a timely intervention as the ‘Bridge cleared the ball with Noel Flynn winning possession at the other end scoring point number 2 for the ‘Bridge. Morgan Lahiffe stretched the D/B lead back out to 3 points two minutes later with a well taken point from play. The ‘Bridge then seemed to up it a gear getting the next 3 points, two from frees and one Evan O Callaghan score from play to tie the game on 22 minutes with 5 points each. Again D/B came back and Matthew Power and then Luke Enright scored one point each to pull away again. With 3 minutes left in the half the ‘Bridge got another huge break when D/B full forward Donal O Driscoll won possession and was baring down on goal. ‘Bridge keeper Conor Murphy realised the danger and came out to meet him in a one on one situation taking the sting out of the strike. Murphy scrambled to get the ball and somehow controlled it as he ran across the goal to clear it. He was awarded a free out for his efforts and the ‘Bridge went in at halftime trailing by two points on score line 0-7 to 0-5.

Any complacency the ‘Bridge might have had as they faced into the second half with wind advantage was wiped out within one minute of the restart, as D/B won possession from the throw in, and worked the ball into Donal O Driscoll who made no mistake burying the ball in the back of the ‘Bridge net. To their credit the ‘Bridge responded well scoring two points from frees in the next 3 minutes to get them back in touch. A minute later they had the ball in the back of the D/B net only for the goal to be disallowed for a square ball. The ‘Bridge’s, Seamus O’ Connell and Conor Murphy switched positions on 7 minutes with O’Connell going into goal and Murphy heading to his favoured half forward post. Now with long puck outs, a ‘Bridge backline that was getting on top and an aggressive forward line the ‘Bridge scored the next five points without reply to go one point up with ten minutes to go. They looked like they were going to pull away but they were met with a very dogged D/B defence and the ‘Bridge, now involved in a very tight game kept going for goal when points would have done quite nicely. Morgan Lahiffe tied the game again with a pointed free out on the wing three minutes from time and that’s how it finished. All square with extra time to come. Discussions out on the pitch between both sets of mentors and Referee came to a decision that light was fading too fast and was unsafe to play extra time. A replay was the decision they came to.

For D/B Matthew Power was outstanding throughout with Cian Moloney and Donal O Driscoll being very dangerous in around the forward line.

For Sixmilebridge Adam O Sullivan, Morgan O Connell, and Scott Kirkland were immense. All three were part of a very effective backline who kept their team in this game on several occasions.
