O’Garney Park will be a hive of activity this coming weekend 17th/18th April as the Minor Executive committee have once again organised the hugely popular Parish League for the U10, U12 and 13-15 year old age groups.
A popular feature of this Festival of Hurling is the participation of our current Senior Panellists as Guest Coaches and mentors for all the teams. The Minor Executive along with the young Players, Coaches and Parents are highly appreciative of the lads giving their time and interest - as well as plenty of banter and craic - with the next Generation of ‘Bridge Hurlers. Action gets underway on Friday evening with the 13-15 year olds battling it out from 6.30pm onwards with the teams being formed on a Village, Kilmurry and Cappa/Ballysheen basis. The teams will play each other once and the top two based on head-to-head/score difference will contest a final that evening.
An interesting subplot in this competition will be seeing how the Grizzly, Old-School Management duo with Kilmurry, fare against their younger Senior colleagues involved with the other teams.....!! Saturday morning then sees our 40 plus U10’s experience their first taste of a Parish league, albeit without the division into Townlands – all that stuff can wait for a couple more years for these boys!
Even so, these boys won’t be lacking when it comes to the keenness of the exchanges and the skills on display with this age group. The boys will be divided into teams representing Counties and every player will be guaranteed at least a solid hour’s hurling and plenty of fun along the way, as well as a chance to observe and wonder how Conor Deasy can look and act younger than them....but still be on the Senior Panel!! From Saturday lunchtime the U12’s will take the stage and provide a fitting finale to the event, and again the divide here will be Cappa/Castlecrine, Village and Kilmurry.
Local bookies have stopped taking bets on the Kilmurry team here, given that they are largely the same group of players who caused a huge shock last year when defeating a Fancied Village team(imagine that in a ‘Bridge Parish League!)The bookies concerns have been heightened by the news that Brian Carey has lobbied long and hard to get his hands on this team.......
We look forward to seeing as many of our supporters and members enjoying some or all of this great Club event for over One Hundred of our 9 – 15 year old Hurlers.
