Inagh Kilnamona 0-7
Sixmilebridge 1-3
17/05/2015 @ 6:30pm
In a very honest game of hurling on a dreary wet evening in Inagh, it was the homeside who came out on top by the narrowest of margins.
The visitors had the first attack of the opening half when Luke O’Hallorans shot was saved by Jack O’Connor in the Combo’s goals with the rebounding ball being narrowly driven wide by Conor O’Grady. In the 3rd minute a very comfortable David Kennedy slotted over his first free of the day for the Sixmilebridge team. This was quickly cancelled out by another free this time at the other side of the field that which was duly put over by Quinton Lernahan, who also took another point from play from the resulting puck out. After a bit of to-and-fro, Colm Flynn sizzored through the Inagh defence for his second shot on goal only to be again to be denied, however, Conor O’Grady was on hand to clean things up and ensure the green flag was raised this time. The Inagh Kilnamona goalkeeper was called in to action again when a penalty was awarded to the Sixmilebridge team for a late tackle on that ever menacing Colm Flynn. Cian Fawl (the ‘Bridge goalkeeper) struck the ball well, but again O’Connor pulled off a fine save to raise many a cheer form the crowd. The sides went in at half time 1-2 to 0-3 in favour of Sixmilebridge.
While weather conditions didn’t improve for the second half, both sets of defences certainly did. The full back lines of both teams were standing solid with attack after attack. Adam O’Sullivan & Ferdia O’Lionan were having to come more in to the game at this point with Mathew Dillon and Evan O’Callaghan doing their best to hold the midfield area. However at this stage Quinton Lernahan was playing a lot more out field and was piling ball in on top of the Bridge defence resulting in three points were picked off by Keith Barry, Niall Mullins & Jack Lyons. The teams were all even for a tense last 10 minutes of the game, a stage at which everyone might have settled for a draw. However Keith Barry had other ideas and slotted over his second point form play in the 59th minute to put Inagh Kilnamona ahead by a point. With time already gone, a very fair ref did allow paly to develop for the Bridge with one last attack resulting in a 65. Cian Fawl blasted the ball with all his might with a goal mouth scramble being eventually cleared by the Inagh defence – the whistle blew and that was that.
Credit due to mentors of both teams for training putting forward these 2nd U14 teams from their respective clubs. This extra effort helps to ensure that every young lad at this age in their respective clubs is getting game … which at the end of the day is all every young lad wants at this age.
