Sixmilebridge 1-15 St. Joseph’s/Doora Barefield 0-11.

Sixmilebridge Minors were at home for this tie V’s St. Joseph’s/Doora Barefield last Friday evening. Played in wet conditions a light drizzle making conditions slippery for the players, St.Josephs/DB were first off the mark with Fionn O’Brien pointing in the first minute. The ‘Bridge however settled quickly and were 6 points to 1 up at the end of the first quarter thanks to 3 points from play from Conor Flynn, 2 from Jack Corry (1 Free) and 1 from Lorcan Fitzpatrick. St.Josephs/DB pulled two points back by the twentieth minute to close the gap before the ‘Bridge enjoyed their second period of dominance. In the next three minutes Jack Corry, Ciaran Hassett, and Tiernan Agnew popped over points, all from play to pull away again. Tiernan Agnew made a lovely run at goal a few minutes later and laid off a nice pass to John Hogan who put the ball into the back of the St.Josephs/D/B net. Unfortunately Agnew collided with the gaolie and was fairly shook up, and the goal was disallowed as Hogan was adjudged to be in the square. They did however get a free out of it as the referee was playing advantage and Jack Corry put this between the posts. Lorcan Fitzpatrick finished the scoring for the half with a long range pointed free to leave the ‘Bridge in good shape going in at halftime with the score line SMB 0-11 St.Josephs/D/B 0-3.
The ‘Bridge introduced Mark Gaule and Matthew Hurley for the second half with John Hogan and James Holloway coming off. Now playing against a light breeze the ‘Bridge seemed to drift out of the game as St.Josephs/D/B got stuck in right from the throw in. They put the ‘Bridge backline line under pressure and had two points scored from frees before Conall Kelleher hit a bullet of a shot at the ‘Bridge goal in the 8th minute. It took an unbelievable save from Shane Whyte in the ‘Bridge goal to deflect the ball over the bar. Jack Corry got one back for the ‘Bridge before St.Josephs/D/B kept the pressure on as they slowly but surely reeled the ‘Bridge in. Their midfield were now getting on top with Tony Butler scoring two of the next 3 points as they closed the deficit to two points as the game entered the final quarter. Shane Whyte again pulled off another good save with five minutes left to prevent St.Josephs/D/B pulling ahead. From the clearance Bruce Pigott won possession and again brought the deficit back to two with a good point. Two minutes later with St.Josephs/D/B forwards pressing yet again the ‘Bridge were very lucky when Conall Kelleher struck at an empty ‘Bridge goal only to see his shot spin across the goal wide of the target.
The ‘Bridge were in danger of being caught in this game and it was their tendency to go for goal every time that was preventing them from scoring. The St.Josephs/D/B back line were very effective in breaking down these attacks with the result that the ‘Bridge failed to score from play in the second half until the game was heading into injury time when Dylan Downes after a good run from midfield hit a cracking point. Lorcan Fitzpatrick finally got the elusive goal a minute later to put a flattering look to the score line. The ‘Bridge ran out seven point winners but in reality it was much closer than that.
For St.Josephs/D/B Bruce Pigott, Eoghan Thynne, and Tony Butler were excellent throughout.
For Sixmilebridge Shane Whyte (Goal Keeper) was excellent and he kept the ‘Bridge in this game making two crucial saves. Conor Flynn was very sharp especially in the first half. Dylan Downes, Jordan Downes, and Ciaran Hassett were also very impressive.
